During his clinical work in the 1950s, Dr. ATW Simeons, a British endocrinologist, brought out the theory of using hCG to help people with obesity or overweight issues to lose weight efficiently.
Human chorionic Gonadotrophin (or famously called as HCG), is a hormone that is secreted in pregnant women. It contains 244 amino acids and is extracted from pregnant women’s urine. Usually, it is used to treat infertility in men and women. While testing hcg in boys with low testosterone levels, Dr. Simeons realized the boys began to slim down and lose excess fat from their body. Over the next decade, he experimented with hcg and concluded how with proper diet restriction, hcg can assist in weight loss. hCG tricks the hypothalamus in tricking that the stomach is full that leads to less appetite.
In 1967, he released a book called Pounds and Inches.
While HCG remains one of the most sought after weight loss factor, Dr. Simeons never received any FDA approval. There are many variations to this hcg diet. While Dr. Simeons restricted calorie intake to 500 calories only, over the years, there are many brands who suggest increase in the calorie intake upto 1500 calories and still proclaiming weight loss.
BAN by FDA
After release of 2007 book “The Weight Loss Cure, What THEY Don’t Want You To Know” where he mentioned Dr. Simeons hcg diet, hcg became insanely famous with many US companies launching their own hcg drops, pellets, spray, injections etc.
Many companies even launched Homeopathic hcg which was very much famous because of its natural characteristic. However, FDA banned sale of homeopathic hcg OTC. Still, there are many companies (US and worldwide) that sell homeopathic hcg.
From mild to serious, there are side effects possible with hcg It is mainly because of the low calorie diet (which is probably one of the reasons why the variation in calorie intake was initiated). While serious side effects of hcg are yet to be confirmed, people who implement hCG diet often complain of headache, frustration, stress, anxiety, diarrhea, constipation, dizzyness, increased hunger and so on.
Nevertheless, the HCG Diet Plan is very much famous and stays one of the most intriguing weight loss diet plan ever.
