Garcinia cambogia drops vs pills – Garcinia Cambogia is a sour tasting and pumpkin shaped fruit that is grown in Southeast Asia, India, and also in west and central Africa. It grows mostly in moist forests. It has an ingredient called HCA or Hydroxycitric Acid.
Garcinia Cambogia became popular after it was discovered that HCA which is extracted from the rind of this fruit had properties which aid in weight loss.
Garcina Cambogia is from the family Guttiferae and is known under various names such as Garcinia gummi-gutta, Malabar tamarind, goraka, kattcha puli (sour fruit) etc. It is usually used in culinary in South India. In India, it is also used to make Ayurvedic medicines, since Ayurveda believes in the theory that sour taste aids in digestion. The fruit has a thin skin and deep vertical lobes. It looks like a yellow, green or red pumpkin. The rinds are normally cured and dried to be used in culinary or medicinal purposes and at that time it looks dark brown or black in color. The size may also vary from that of an orange to that of a grapefruit.
The HCA or hydroxycitric acid is extracted from the rind of this fruit. This product was promoted in the USA in the Dr. Oz TV show in 2012 as a ‘miracle product’ for weight loss and it became popular only after that. No clinical trials have however been done to substantiate the claim.
Garcinia Cambogia is mostly found in forested areas, but in some places in India and in Southeast Asia, these trees are protected in plantations which grows coffee, pepper and other spices.
Garcinia Cambogia has been used for many years in Asia. It is mainly used to prepare traditional recipes in India, Thailand, Malaysia, Burma and other Southeastern countries. It is used as a souring condiment in curries in India (especially seafood) and Thailand.
The fruit is said to have anti-bacterial properties and hence used for curing fish in Sri Lanka and South India.
In India, Ayurvedic medicines make use of this fruit as the sour flavor is said to induce digestion. Hence it is used to treat gastrointestinal disorders. It is also used as a heart tonic because of its high levels of Vitamin C.
It was only after 2012, that this product was promoted as a natural supplement to promote weight-loss. The HCA extracted from this fruit is said to have many benefits. It is said to increase the level of serotonin which helps emotional eaters get better sleep and better their moods. HCA also helps suppress appetite which ultimately leads to weight loss. Studies done on animals found that HCA also helps to inhibit the fatty acid production, increases the burning of fat and hence helps lose weight without stimulating the central nervous system. It reduces depression, psychological stress and induces normal sleep.
Garcinia Cambogia extract is said to act as a fat blocker and allows the natural passing of fat through the body thus maintaining healthy blood and cholesterol levels. It gives the users a sense of fullness, thus preventing them from overeating and snacking. The product gives the users a general feeling of well being and reduces stress and depression. It naturally flushed out impurities. This supplement works by inhibiting the enzymes that convert carbohydrates to fats. Though this product has not been evaluated by the FDA, the extracts are manufactured in certified labs.
A recent publication in the Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine journal has argued that scientists did not find any case study or report showing the direct adverse effect of HCA. This means that HCA produced naturally without any unhealthy additives from a trustworthy company is perfectly safe for use. Researcher Linda king has asked users to look for the following points for choosing a safe and effective supplement.
A number of studies on the effect of HCA in weight loss has been conducted on both rats and humans.
Some studies in rats showed that HCA inhibits fat producing enzyme called Citrate Lyase making it difficult for the body to produce fat from carbohydrates. A second study reported an increased level of neurotransmitter serotonin which could lead to reduced appetite. Other studies also showed a significant weight loss in rats.
Studies have also been conducted on humans. A study was done on 135 overweight individuals, divided into two groups. One group took 3 grams of Garcinia Cambogia extract in three doses, 30 minutes before food and the other group did not take the supplement. Both groups took a low calorie diet with high fiber. The results were published in The Journal of The American Medical Association (a highly respected scientific journal). Both groups lost weight with no significant difference in the group that took the supplement. Other studies too showed similar results leading to the conclusion that ‘HCA can cause short-term weight loss though the magnitude of the effect is small and clinical relevance uncertain’.
From a number of research that was conducted to test the effectiveness of Garcinia Cambogia extract in the last few years, a review article published in the Journal of Obesity in 2011 showed that Garcinia Cambogia trials had a “statistically significant difference in weight loss favoring HCA over placebo.”
Which one works better? Well the hcg vs hca fight will not end. People who have used hcg find success and dont move to hca and vice versa. Its all about whats comfortable for you. But then here is the twist. Neither of these drops work if not followed with the proper diet. While hca has a typical taste whcih people find annoying, hcg has no taste or after effects. The diet, is quite strenous for both the diet program.
The commonly recommended dosage is 500 mg, 3 times per day, half an hour before meals though some recommend up to 800 mg. thrice daily. It has been reported that is to safe to use supplements with HCA up to 3000 mg in a single day with the dosage ranging from 500 mg to 1000 mg before each meal.
No research has shown any significant side effects after taking Garcinia Cambogia. It is safe for most people when taken in the specified quantity and duration. Any side effect that has been reported like hepatotoxicity, headache or nausea is reported only in supplements which were not manufactured in the USA and which had artificial binders and additives added to it. It is better to avoid taking the supplements during pregnancy and breast feeding since there are no studies conducted to check its safety during this period. Children, patients suffering from diabetes mellitus and also people with dementia or Alzheimer’s are also advised not to use the supplement.
The reviews on this product has been mixed with a number of people reporting significant weight loss and a equal number of users not having lost any weight. Some users did not find any reduction in their appetite too. So it is very difficult to conclude about the efficiency of this supplement from the customer reviews.
All the research done so far on humans have been on small groups over a short time. So no conclusion can be arrived at on the long term effectiveness of using Garcinia cambogia supplements. No significant side effects have also been reported in any of the studies conducted. So Garcinia cambogia supplements can be safely used to lose weight if it works for you!
